| Customer Reviews: Good, solid book about online poker May 28, 2010 David Erickson 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a player who is somewhat experienced at playing home games (I can usually finish in the top one or two spots when playing against my friends), I was looking to start getting into online poker, and found this book very helpful. It's fairly short and sweet, which might be a bad thing for some people, but I found the info concise and practical. I particularly benefited from the section on bluffing (usually a weak point in my own game) and the one on playing in online sit-and-go's.
My only personal complaint about the book is that a few of the sections seemed kind of unnecessary. The one on "the history of poker" springs to mind: if I want to know the history of poker, I can look it up myself, i just want to know how to win. That being said, 80-90% of this book is useful content, so I don't consider this a big problem.
I see that one gentleman gave this book a very bad review based on the fact that it's a short book and more oriented towards the beginner to intermediate level player. I agree with those points, even though I think that a one-star review is way too harsh. If you've already read tons of poker books, then I agree that you should probably skip this book. But for someone like me who hasn't read a lot and is trying to start improving their game by studying, I think this is a really helpful little book, and personally feel like it's already paid for itself based on the amount of money I've won so far in my first forays into online play. So if you're anything like me, I recommend it.
Great book for someone who loves poker March 16, 2010 Charity Cason (GA, USA) This book is a great read for the poker lover or even someone who is just interested in learning more about the game. Would also make a great gift for the poker fanatic in your life!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY..SHOULD BE CALLED INTRODUCTION TO POKER March 5, 2010 J. Holmes (CA, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have purchased countless poker books ranging from Sklansky, Harrington, Malmuth, Jones to lesser known authors and this is the worst I have read by far. To start with the book is extremely thin and is hardly more than a glorified pamphlet about Hold'em. The information is very basic with rules of the game, poker vocabulary and description of basic concepts as position, hand values, etc. taking up a good chunk of the material. As far as actual strategy there is LITTLE if any useful information. You could easily get the information in this "book" on numerous online poker sites for free. Stick with Sklansky, Jones, Harrington, etc. or at least authors that you have heard of and have had known success at the game. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS BOOK.
Wished I had Read this BEFORE going to Poker***... February 28, 2010 Mike Carraway (Alabama) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I took a real beating on an online poker site about 2 weeks ago and decided I had better learn a few things before I went back. This book was actually the third book I bought on how to win at Texas Holdem. The other two were full of stats and numbers and hard to follow. This one is REAL. And it's written so that you can understand it. It starts out basic and then builds on what it teaches. By the end of it - YOU GET IT. So - does it work? I took in over $400 last night online!!! Wooo Hooo! Thanks for writing this one - I DO NOT recommend it if you play on the same sites that I do! Otherwise - it's a winner.
A Great Book - Very helpful February 22, 2010 Ken Jones Blinds (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have just read this through a couple of times to try and absorb its contents. There are so many "light bulb" moments in it that I am amazed.
I can see that I play this game wrong and have been for years. Now I'm going to give it another go.
My favourite bit was the section on bluffing - something I really can't do.
As well as the game playing and tactics there is a glossary of terms that really gets you into the game. Both real poker and online poker are discussed with their various merits. The greatest benefit will be for online players as the information is very current.
Can't think of a weak point anywhere. Have to give it top marks.
